How it works
For imperial units (MPG), the fuel needed is the distance divided by miles per gallon. Multiply by the price per gallon to get the total cost.
For metric units (L/100km), the fuel needed is (distance ÷ 100) × liters per 100km. Multiply by the price per liter to get the total cost.
Fuel efficiency varies with driving speed, road type, load, and temperature. The estimate is most accurate for steady highway driving. Urban driving with frequent stops typically reduces efficiency by 20–30%.
Formula
For metric: Fuel (liters) = (Distance in km ÷ 100) × L/100km. Total cost = Fuel × Price per liter.
Example: A 250-mile road trip
Driving 250 miles in a car that gets 32 MPG, with gas priced at $3.50 per gallon.
Result: Fuel needed: 7.81 gallons. Total cost: $27.34.
Assumptions
- The fuel efficiency figure is an average for the trip. Actual consumption varies based on speed, load, air conditioning, and terrain.
- The fuel price entered is used as a flat rate. Prices differ between stations and may change during a long trip.
- This calculator estimates fuel cost only. It doesn't include tolls, parking, food, or accommodation.
- Fuel efficiency is typically lower in city driving than highway driving. If your trip is mostly urban, use a lower MPG or L/100km figure.
