Tip Calculator
Enter the bill total, choose a tip percentage, and split between as many people as needed. The calculator shows the tip amount, the total with tip, and what each person pays.
Tip Calculator
How it works
The tip amount is calculated as a percentage of the pre-tax bill. Multiply the bill by the tip percentage (as a decimal) to get the tip.
Add the tip to the original bill to get the total. Divide the total by the number of people for the per-person amount.
Tipping customs vary by country and service type. In the US, 15–20% is typical for restaurant service. For exceptional service, 20–25% is common.
Formula
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100 to get the tip amount. Add the tip to the bill for the total. Divide by the number of people for each person's share.
Example: Dinner for 4 people
A restaurant bill of $120 with a 18% tip, split between 4 people.
Result: Tip: $21.60. Total: $141.60. Each person pays: $35.40 (including $5.40 tip each).
Assumptions
- The tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount you enter. Some people prefer to tip on the pre-tax total, others on the total including tax. Either is acceptable.
- The bill split is equal between all people. If some people ordered more than others, you'll need to calculate individual shares separately.
- No service charge is assumed to be already included. Check your bill — some restaurants automatically add a service charge for large groups.
